A sustainable business is also a socially responsible business. An organization must ensure that it’s activities and contributions towards it’s social responsibility are truly affecting the targeted audience and not merely a demonstration without any real intention.
A business is not outside of the society. It is part and parcel of it. The main aim of business is to profitably provide the goods and services which the society needs. Being inherent in the society, a business needs to be aware of it's social responsibilities as well. First, the business needs to ensure that the operations are conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner. Prevention of pollution, minimizing wastage and recycling form critical components of this mode of operation. The second part relates to the wealth-creation aspect of the business. A successfully run business creates wealth for shareholders. It is upto to the business to channelize a portion of the same in socially relevant causes such as helping setup economic enablers for the upliftment of deprived individuals. Being an enterprise level issue, this must form a part of the management planning exercise.
