Safguarding Against Sexual & Other Harrassment
Presence of harassment of any kind, whether real or perceived, is likely to hit the productivity very badly besides leading to attrition and other employee-issues. This is for obvious reasons. What is not so obvious is the fact that such matters cause loss in productivity and consume precious time and resources in sorting the matter out.
An organization cannot have a positive work environment if any form of harassment is prevalent in the employee community. This harassment can be based on caste, gender, social & cultural background, race, ethnic background, any peculiar disability or problem etc. Whatever be the ground, harassment of any kind fosters emotions of fear, hostility and stress in the working environment besides creating a fertile ground for polarization. All of these are harmful for business as they target the cohesiveness of the internal structure of the organization. They also malign the image of the organization in the job market and drive away genuine talent. Special attention needs to be paid to the prevention of sexual harassment. Besides having a detailed policy prohibiting all kinds of harassment and providing redressal mechanisms, the execution of the same is even more important since the winning employees' trust in these matters is very important and it cannot be done unless the policies are acted upon whenever such incidence occur. HR department needs to take a very hard and strong stance against harassment as it can impact the performance majorly.
