Learning & Development is both for long term as well as for the short term. In fact the goal sheet can provide immediate inputs as to the L&D requirements since the goals are the short term deliverables of the employee.

It is not only the Leadership Competency assessment sheet that throws light on the kind of learning and development activities the employee must be undertaking. Leadership competencies are crucial in their own right and especially so for the long term and senior levels. This does not mean however that the current goals to be achieved in the current performance period are less important. In a commercial organization, an employee has to first deliver on his/her KRAs anyways. Goal sheets provide a structured approach towards attaining the set goals and they are an important source for stemming learning and development activities. An employee must prioritize the goals and decide upon the L&D activities which will enable him/her to acquire the necessary skills and traits in order to perform and deliver what is deliverable in the near future. HR must ensure to provide support to the employee in this decision making process. Learning & development initiatives which aid in improving the employee’s execution prowess provide immediate benefit. They are critical steps towards achieving the desired performance excellence.
