L& D Progress included in performance assessment
Learning and Development activities and assessment must be an inherent part of the Performance Management System. They should not be conducted and assessed in parallel to the same. They are crucial precursors to the performance excellence drive in the organization and have to be part of the mainstream performance assessment.
It is important to integrate the Learning and Development initiatives as part of the overall Performance Management System in the organization. The emphasis on Learning & Development does not end at announcing and conducting such activities. Execution of an active mechanism to measure and assess the effect of Learning & Development activities on the performance of the employee is required. This implies including the Learning & Development progress as part of the performance assessment process of the Performance Management System in the organization. This entails that at the points at which the performance is assessed, it is not only the KRAs, core responsibilities, people goals and leadership competencies which are assessed; but the progress made on the learning and development goals is also measured and the employee is given active feedback on the same. This also entails that the learning and development goals and their course of progress must be quantifiable and measurable in the first place. Once again, HR and Training departments play a major role in enabling this to help in fostering a culture of performance excellence.
