Assessing L&D success with Performance Success
The ultimate test of learning and development initiatives is a substantial increase in the performance level of the employee. L&D activities are not done just for the sake of it. Increased productivity and development of leadership competency is the end-objective of them and hence their success should be measured accordingly.
Learning & Development initiatives are not stand-alone activities. They are undertaken for a specific purpose and that purpose is performance excellence. Learning & development fills a required gap in the skill-level of the employee in order to equip him/her to broaden his/her execution capability spectrum and deliver as per the goal sheet. They serve as enablers for the employee as well as the organization to realize the longer term vision each has about the performance level and consequent possibilities. Hence, a learning & development program is successful if the targeted employee(s) shows a marked and visible improvement in his/her performance level and is significantly closer to the vision of performance excellence. It is also a test of the execution effectiveness of the HR and Training departments.
