Learning & Development is for the long term career as well. It is not merely a means to improve short or medium term performance. It is part of the career strategy of the employee. An employee must decide what L&D activities he/she must undertake in order to develop his/her career in the desired domain.

Learning & Development is a long term strategy with continuous application. It does not limit itself to achievement of goals in the current performance period. It is imperative that the HR department communicates the same to the employee that while charting out the Learning and Development plan for himself/herself, he/she must take into account not only the current goals in the current performance period, but also the longer term career path. An employee can chart out possible career paths from the Career Management System. Planning learning and development initiatives to acquire the necessary skills and competencies to reach the desired destination is the next step. HR and Training department must play the crucial role of making this clear to the employee and encourage each to keep in mind the future career potential while framing the learning and development plan.
