Performance assessment responsibility of employee

Performance Management System

Peformance Management System is a 360 degree process to enable an organization drive its performance & execution. It includes the three pillars of performance (Goals-What?, Leadership- How?, Learning & Development).

Performance assessment responsibility of employee

The Performance Management System starts with the appraisee himself/herself. The appraisee assesses his/her own self first. Thus, he/she is an integral part of the assessment as well and it is his/her responsibility to start the process.

The Performance Management System does not begin with the appraiser. It begins with the appraisee who assesses his/her own performance. The first performance rating to be put on the assessment sheet is that of the appraisee. The appraisee looks back and assesses his/her own performance against the goals set earlier. Although the appraiser and reviewer’s ratings do have a greater say in the final assessment, involving the appraisee gives him/her a chance to discuss and present his/her point of view to the appraiser. Thus, participation by the appraisee adds a value in it’s own self to the process. It is important also because it ensures that the appraisee does not feel that he/she is responsible for performance only and the assessment is done by “them”. HR needs to be mindful of the fact that this aspect is critical for the employee community to have a buy-in for the Performance Management System as well as their drive towards execution and performance excellence.
