Mid-term appraisal is the performance assessment done in the middle of the year to check whether the appraisee is going as per the planned performance schedule or not. This is an important interim checkpoint which can provide the appraisee an opportunity for course correction or a realistic revision in the targets.
Mid-term appraisal refers to the performance assessment and feedback session which takes place at the end of the second quarter. A year is too long a gap in between appraisals. Having mid-year appraisals breaks that gap and provides an interim check-point. It is crucial from the point of view of course-correction. An employee should not wait for an entire year to find out that he/she had deviated from the execution plan months ago. Mid-term appraisal follows the same pattern and rigor as the annual appraisal does. However, there are differences as well. It may not be as exhaustive as the latter and extreme ratings are avoided in this. This is due to the fact that it is mid-year and the employee has the potential and time to veer in any direction. It is important to have normalization of ratings here as well. Learning & development objectives may flow from the mid-term appraisal exercise as well.
