Skip Level meeting refers to face-to-face interaction between an employee and his/her level 2 manager. The immediate reporting manager is not present. This provides an opportunity to the level 2 manager to gain a vital insight into unaddressed issues and the reporting manager’s effectiveness.
Skip level interaction refers to a face-to-face discussion between the appraisee-employee and the Level-2 reporting manager. Thus, the direct reporting manager, i.e.. Level-1 manager is skipped in between. This is a powerful tool in which the appraisee may discuss about his/her direct reporting manager with the Level-2 manager. It may provide room for discussion on issues which might not have taken place in the appraiser-appraisee meeting earlier. Also, an interaction with the appraisee also provides the Level-2 manager an insight into the style of leadership and management of the direct reporting manager. HR must ensure that this practice is instituted firmly since it can have a profound long term impact on the performance by the employee. It changes the way an employee looks at the Performance Management System and his/her own execution quotient.
