Year –end ranking refers to the final ranking which the employee receives after completion of the annual appraisal session. It is a value between a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 denoting poor and 5 denoting outstanding performance. It is arrived at after the process of self-assessment, appraiser assessment of various components of the goals sheet which is later combined with a score of the organizational performance which is then finally normalized. It is a judgmental statement regarding the overall performance of the employee during the previous 12 months and the increments and the bonus for the employee is decided based on this final rating. It is a crucial driver of the employee performance and the end-result for which the entire Performance Management System’s structure is geared to optimize. The HR department acts as a crucial facilitator in this entire process which aims at achieving performance excellence.
